Outsider arts

My dear pal Nancy has been taking a course called The Picture a Poem Makes, at The Poetry School in London, and she sent me a link her classmates have been sharing: UbuWeb, which describes itself as “a completely independent resource dedicated to all strains of the avant-garde, ethnopoetics, and outsider arts”. Just the place to find those elusive Gertrude Stein MP3s.

  1. well i must admit that since my return from st. pete’s and the hot plate in the hermitage i have enjoyed some epicurean indulgences, though none so extravgent as your leek tart and salmon coulibia. did bake an amazing chocolate cake for my father’s 75th… which called for 5 eggs, 2 cups of sugar and a cup of butter and 4 squares or chocolate. and then there was the mocha icing. my first home-cooked meal was a french omelette, brie, portabello mushrooms, scallions, basil.

and I agree, Elizabeth Bachinsky is a wonderful poet. Curio soars.

  2. Rhona, you are so good for me. I have been hither and yon through the web checking on sources and interviews and discovering all sorts of intriguing stuff. I think it was Mary-Lou who said something about “formalist” at the colony and I didn’t have a clue. If I had been quicker I might have guessed but sometimes I’m not so quick. Regardless, up here in the bushes there is not a lot of casual chat about formalism of any kind. This is very refreshing.
Looking to music was the right thing to do to find the divergence between meter and rhythm. I always think of the rhythm as being what makes something swing. Meter is much more matter of fact.
Yes I do read the food notes. All it does is make me hungry. One day I too will prepare something more extravagant than steamed rice.

  3. Thanks Carla! Indeed, I find there isn’t enough casual chat about formalism anywhere I go. So I’m glad you’re along for the ride. And don’t forget to let us know what comes after steamed rice! (Hmm.. do I feel a risotto coming on…?)
